Omega 3 Fatty Acids in your bird's Diet

According to Artemis P. Simopoulos, M.D. and Jo Robinson in a book called ’The Omega Diet' it would be impossible to be deficient in Omega 3 fatty acids if our birds foraged for food in the wild because it would be present in virtually everything they ate. Essential Fatty Acids are easily destroyed by air, light and heat. Our birds (and human) bodies cannot produce them so we must provide it in the food we serve them. Omega 3 fatty acids are rich in beta carotene, antioxidants & fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E & K, and is known to reduce heart attacks, allergies, arthritis pain, depression & diabetes in people and animals. Some owners of feather-plucking birds swear that the use of omega 3 fatty acids in their birds diet on a regular basis slowed down or completely stopped plucking. Most of these birds also became more relaxed and calm.

No one knows for sure what parrots in the wild eat. But, we do know that what they eat is fresh, meaning their diet contains not only natural vitamins and minerals but also essential fatty acids and other things we don’t know yet that are important for their well-being. Omega 3 fatty acids also contains lingan. Lignan is documented to have antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral and anticancer properties. Omega 3 fatty acids is found in flax seed and flax seed oil and both can be purchased at your favorite health food store and should be added to your birds diet several times per week. Below are some ideas how you can include omega 3 fatty acids in your birds diet on a regular basis:

Pasta Salad
Cooked pasta (any kind)
Thawed frozen corn
Chopped broccoli
Shredded carrot
1 Table spoon flax seed oil
Mix well and serve!

Tip:

Buy some flax seed and serve it in your birds favorite food bowl several times per week!

Birdie Muffins

2 cups corm flour
1 small jar of Gerber's baby food, sweet potatoes
1 juiced orange
1 mashed (ripe) banana
2 table spoons Flax seed oil
A handful of flax seed
1 1/2 Table spoons of baking powder
1/4 cup of vegetable oil
A dash of salt

Grease a mini muffin pan and bake the muffins in the oven at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes. Cool and serve. Freeze the remaining muffins and defrost on a daily basis for a special treat.
