Our family adopted Ozzie, the Half Moon Conure just the other
day. He has adapted to his new environment nicely and even gets along with
our dog. He's been playing peekaboo with him. I think he talks to the dog
more than he talks to us!! We have a large cage for him that he seems to
enjoy, he's eating and drinking well and stepping up to everyone without
attempting to bite.
I just wanted to let you know how well he's doing because I know that the first few days in a new environment can be quite an adjustment. Actually, I think he's enjoying the peace and quiet of his new home. I'm still looking for an avian vet and will probably go with Dr. Neidermeyer per the recommendation of a friend, but havent set anything up yet. I'll probably stop by again a few times to vist and play some of the other birds. I'm a fan of the big birds myself, but in my opinion, our home doesn't have enough space to accomodate a large cage and play area. Thanks again for allowing us to add Ozzie to our family. We look forward to enjoying him for years to come.

Hello Sandi, Randy & Crew, We just wanted to let you know that Deuce has adjusted well and is doing fine. This of course is the first day of Deuce's new beginning. He is the perfect little guy, we couldn't have asked for more. This morning as I was getting breakfast ready, as a big surprise Deuce started making the microwave beeping sound so much so I thought I had left food in the microwave. Then later in the day Deuce started to "ring" like a phone, I was in the kitchen getting him a snack and noticed that as soon as I left the room Deuce started to make the sound of a ringing phone and he would proceed to answer with a "hello". This little guy made me smile all day long. Oh, and whenever I approached him I'd say "Hi Baby" and to my surprise later in the day Deuce started saying it back as soon as I approached....what a guy, we just LOVE him! He has to be one of the most loving creatures....we are very lucky to have him as part of our family. Again, thank you so much for giving us this opportunity; we can't thank you enough. Adopting a bird from the sanctuary is definitely so much better then even thinking about buying from a pet store or a breeder. We truly hope that good people give these wonderful birds a second chance .....everyone deserves a second chance and this includes our little feathered friends! |

Sandi,
Just an update since we "fell of the face of the earth" after adopting Kiki. We are calling her Stella, and she was VERY aggressive when we first brought her home. You couldn't even go near her cage. With a lot of love and patience, she is now a wonderful addition to our family. She is rarely aggressive anymore. She spends lots of time out of her cage with us. She sings and talks all the time, and even imitates us laughing. We are so glad we adopted her. I have attached some pictures. Paige, myself and my sister are planning to do the Feet for Feathers walk in September. Thanks! Cherree |

Just want to let you know Hugo and Dill made it home safe
and sound.
For tonight they are in a smaller cage as I still have to pick up the big one tomorrow. They are real sweethearts. Little Dill Pickle seems very shy compared to Hugo who seems to be a real character already. I can't wait to see them interacting more and playing in a big cage. Thanks for letting me adopt them. Hi Sandi, I just thought that we would drop you a note to let you know how Omar is settling in. He is turning out to be a wonderful birdie. We love him so much. He is very funny too. He is integrating well in his new cage and new "flock". He had a great car ride home. He spent almost the whole trip hanging upside down from the top of the traveling cage. He accepted his new surroundings like a real trooper. He "Step Up"s very well and has lots of outside time on the top of his cage. The cage top is set up like a playgym for his amusement. He loves most fruits and vegetables, peas are some of his favorites. He also likes lettuce and tomatoes. He loves pasta as well. Both I and my husband are able to scratch his head feathers. I have to go to a neutral room to do so, my husband (who is taller) is able to pet him on the cage. I can't reach quite high enough to overcome his natural territorialness on his cage, but I hold him on a stick and am able to pet him freely. He had a bit of a beak imperfection when we took him home that you recommended that we have a vet take care of. We had a sandy perch in the cage and Omar seems to be a rubber. He sanded all the imperfection away. We are glad we were watching though. He likes to rub his beak on things way to much. He was wearing away too much of his beak and it was getting a bit thin. We have removed the sandy perch and his beak is getting better. He appears to like bathing in a shallow bowl of water. I just watched him try to bathe in his water dishes. It was very humorous to watch and there is now water everywhere. He is turning out to be a very noisy bird. He says "Hello" very well, and he does a great "Wolf Whistle" and makes a couple of other jungle noises and trills. He and our other bird are beginning to get into contests as to who can make the most noise. Omar also isn't intimidated by our cat. He doesn't chase the cat across the living room like our other bird, but I am sure that will come next. No bites yet although he has lunged once or twice but we were paying attention to body language so we stayed one step ahead of the beak. Quite the little stinker. Although, once or twice when he lunged to bite, he only wanted to taste. Our Blue and Gold macaw was like that also. He would lung as if to bite, and when you didn't show a reaction, he would simply "taste" our fingers. He was testing the boundaries to see if we could be intimidated. All in all, I think he is adjusting well to us and we are adjusting to his ways. I believe this to be a good fit of critters and family "flock". I am so glad we picked Omar. He is a wonderful companion and we are loving him more with each passing day. I am sure that in time he will be a fully handle as our other bird. It will simply take time and patience. Both of which we have in abundance. We have included a couple of pictures of Omar and his new home. Thank you for the opportunity to have a new friend and companion in our lives. We will continue to remain in touch and forward our friends to you should they wish to add a bird in their lives. Marc and Elizabeth |

Well, Pearl has settled in nicely. After we got home, I went
to Mounds and found a new style of perch that is like the braided cord perches,
except that it is a cable coated in rubber about the diameter of a dime.
It gives them good traction and since it has no bumps or knobs, seems easier
for them to negotiate. I also found seed and water cups that attach to the
cage wires at varying heights, so I've been able to place them at heights
that are easiest for them to feed and drink (and bathe---as Pearl has demonstrated).
It was really sunny and warm yesterday, so I had all of the birds (the boys
too) in the front room and opened the windows. The sun poured in and they
could hear the garden fountain, other birds outside, and kids playing as
well......I think they had a delightful day (and it looks like today will
be just as nice).
We have named out gray gal "Opal", because she's an Australian gem whose beauty is only revealed by prying open the rock. She really doesn't like to be handled yet, so I'm not pushing her. She still seems stressed, as her poops continue to be pretty watery. However, she's eating and drinking better now, and though she doesn't want to be handled, she really perks up when I go over to the cage and talk quietly to her. So we'll give her some time and hopefully she'll come around eventually.
I think both of our new gals do have a sense of how fortunate they now are, as they are clearly revelling in the joys of their new environment...a window to look out of, other birds to watch, peace and quiet when they need it. I think, however, that it is really my husband and me who are the fortunate ones for having had them become a part of our "flock". We are absolutely delighted that everyone has settled in so nicely. Thank you again for all of your help! |
| SANDI AND RANDY, JUST A SHORT NOTE TO LET YOU KNOW THAT WE BOTH ARE DOING QUITE WELL. DAVID IS TEACHING ME TO WHISTLE YANKEE DOODLE (ZEUS), AND BETTY SEEMS TO HAVE ALL OF THE FAMILY MEMBERS WRAPPED AROUND HER LITTLE FEET. I HAVE GAINED ABOUT 30 GRAMS SINCE COMING HERE. I REALLY ENJOY THIS HOME. I HAVE ALL THE WOODEN TOYS THAT I WANT. ALTHOUGH THEY DON'T LAST LONG. DAVID HAS NICKNAMED ME HIS "LITTLE BUZZ SAW". WE ALL THREE GET OUT ABOUT 5-7 HOURS A DAY FOR EXERCISE. BETTY HAS BEEN GETTING STRONGER AND GAINING WEIGHT ALSO. SHE HAS PUT ON ABOUT 35 GRAMS. I AM REALLY HAPPY TO SEE THIS. SHE NEEDED A HOME WITH LOTS OF LOVE. SHE IS HOWEVER A LITTLE BIT INTIMIDATED BY THEIR OTHER BIRD "WAKA" HE HAS BEEN TRYING REAL HARD NOT TO SCARE HER BUT SHE JUST IS NOT REAL SURE OF WHAT HE MIGHT DO. I ASKED DAVID IF HE WOULD ENCLOSE SOME PHOTO'S FOR YOU BOTH TO ENJOY. YOU WILL FIND THEM IN THE ATTACHMENTS. THANK YOU FOR LETTING THE KINGS ADOPT US. WE ARE BOTH QUITE HAPPY AND ENJOY ALL THE ATTENTION THAT WE GET. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. ZEUS AND BETTY |

Hello, just thought that I would give you an update of the citron cockatoo that we have adopted. We decided to change the name from babycakes to Stacie. That is a good name for her/him. We call it a her. She no longer has to be toweled to come out of the cage. Her door is open often and learning that she has the freedom to go in and out when we are home. Her bad habit of sliding her beak on the bars has been reduced greatly. She sits on our shoulders and gives kisses. Learning to enjoy the shower too. Still working on her being hand shy but it is getting better. The dog Fred and her get along great. They have spent time grooming each other and chasing each other. Neither have tried to hurt their play mate. The cage is in the living room With is the center of the world here. Still no talking but also no screaming so far. We are very happy that we found your organization and choose to adopt from you instead of buying of PET STORE baby. I have told several people about how you have many other birds looking for a good home and hope that when they choose to add a bird to their family, they will look into adopting from you. Feel free to share this letter to all since I am very happy with my addition and look forward to many years with her. Jennifer and Ron |

Hi Sandi and Friends, Well it's been a few months since we adopted Keeya (we renamed her from KuKla). The name means 'beautiful garden'. She is adapting very well into her new home and it's like she's always been here. We adopted her to be a daddy's girl, but she seems to like her mommy better . . . go figure! She is not a picky eater, enjoying everything we put out for her. She loves veggies, birdie bread and Beak Appetite, especially washed down with carrots and apples! And she loves cashews! She is quite content and has made a friend of Picasso (our Rainbow Lorikeet). Picasso has been spotted feeding Keeya the last few days . . . as if she's not eating enough! Bijou is doing very well too! Her wing feathers are growing in and she's flying short distances . . . mostly to get to me! I was prepared for a very loud bird . . . and she is loud . . . but I enjoy it as it means she's happy and she's really not as loud as I thought she'd be! She mostly does it for a few minutes in the morning and in the evening along with much feather flapping and hopping about! Every now and then though she'll let out a loud shout if I don't check in often enough! I can't tell you how much I enjoy her and how much I love her! It amazes me every day how her personality fits so well with mine (or should that be the other way round?). Anyway, she's doing great! She's talking quite a bit although I can't understand everything she's saying. She says "whatcha doin?" and "pretty Bijou" though which is so cute in her little girl voice. Thanks so much for allowing us to make Bijou and Keeya a part of our family! |

Casey & Cory were adopted to a great home, here they are with their new dad! |
| Dear Sandi,
It has been almost four months since we took Anny to our home. We just want to give you a quick update and send you a few pictures of Anny. She is very happy in her new home! We bought a very large cage and a huge play stand for her. She has a lot of toys and many treats. At the beginning, Anny was not willing to leave her cage and would try to warn us not to take her out. Maxim and I made a decision not to force her, and give her some time to get use to new situation and us on her own terms. Now she is out of her cage most of the time and loves to travel on our shoulders around the house. Anny is shy but likes to explore new things as long as she is with us. She eats fresh vegetables and fruits everyday and loves them. She is very sweet and friendly pet. Anny dos not have any behavioral problems. She accepted us remarkably fast. I am so happy that we adopted her. Both Maxim and I love our new Baby. I think it is wonderful what you do for birds at the shelter. We would like to thank you once more for your time and effort! |

Hi Sandi and Friends,
I just wanted to send you a little note and let you know that Im doing fine! My new mom and dad (Teresa and Brian) have provided me with a huge cage (we call it home here) and a few toys. They are going to go shopping and buy me more sometime this week. I have a feeling Im going to be very spoiled!
I spent Sunday afternoon getting used to my new home and my new surroundings. Its pretty nice here and quiet. My mom and dad spent the day slowly coming up to my home and saying hello pretty girl. By the way, I can say hello pretty girl . . . they were shocked and amazed! Now when mom or dad walks up to my cage I greet them by saying hello pretty girl.
Monday was pretty uneventful in the morning, but dad came home at lunch time and got me out of my home. Unfortunately, he had to use a towel, but once I was out I was okay. I love my mommy already and spent the afternoon sitting and cuddling with her. I even got to eat supper with her! I got my own plate of macaroni and happily ate from my moms hand. I went to bed around 8 oclock and got a good nights sleep.
Today, again the morning was uneventful, but dad came home at lunch time and got me out of my home . . . without a towel this time! I spent the afternoon with mom cuddling on the couch and watching TV. She also spent a lot of time gently petting me in my home so that I would get used to her hands being in there. By the end of the day I was willingly stepping up on her hand to come out of my home. My mom is so proud of me!! She also spent some time taking me into the kitchen so that I would get used to it. Shes going to take me into a new room every day for a few minutes, so that hopefully, in time, I can walk around the house with her happily sitting on her arm. Oh, and shes decided not to get a job so she can be at home with me.
Im not liking my dad too much . . . I think because he used a towel on me, but I let him feed me and I did spent some time tonight sitting on his arm being cuddled. Ill try to get used to him . . . just to please my mom!! |

Hey Sandi! Cotton is doing much better today! I got his playgym today and set it up for him and he loves it! He has been climbing around all night...attacking his shredding toys! He steps up for dan but that's it...he lets me pet him for hours though :) He was sitting on the couch with me tonight and we did homework together (literally...Cotton grabbed my pen and started writing on my paper! We do need to work on his penmanship, but I was still amazed!) He is starting to eat now...loved his dinner tonight of sweet potatoes and crazy corn. He suprises me with a new phrase every time I see him. I came home today and he yelled "HELLLOOOOO!!" and tonight he asked me "how's it doin'?" Haha...he's so charming and smart! Here are some pictures of him, one with his favorite toy from you and the other is him on his playgym. I know he misses you very much, he still says "Cotton?" and it sounds just like you!! Thank you so much for letting me adopt him...he is so awesome and Sara loves having him here, too--she doesn't screech when we leave the apartment anymore, which is wonderful!! You guys are amazing. Thank you again for all that you do. |

I just wanted to let you know that Popsicle is doing fine. We renamed him Sherbert, or Bert, for short. We are so excited to have him, and Scarlett seems to enjoy him as they shadow each other from their seperate cages. They met outside their cages for the first time today and did pretty well. Since we found out that Scarlett (either jack or jill originally) is really a boy most likely, we are calling him Ernie...So now we have Bert and Ernie. I hated changing his name again but I felt guilty letting him have a girl's name. |

Sweet-Pea happy in her new home! |
| Hi Sandy and Randy!
I just wanted to let you know how Paco is doing. He is very happy and is loving his new home! He was a bit freaked out on Sunday when we first brought him home, but now he is doing fantastic. We bought him a perch so he can sit by us all the time without being on our shoulders and he loves that. Paco is surprisingly loud (in a good way). He makes a high pitched chirp
that sounds kind of like a smoke detector (but only about half a second
long), but he'sonly done that two or three times since he's been here.
Most of his noises are just little chirps and babbling. He talks all the
time, but I can't figure |
|
I just wanted to give you an update on Monty.
He seems to have adopted his new family and is getting along well. He continues
to surprise me with his intelligence. He was sitting on top of his cage
and I watched him go over to one of the nuts that hold the cage together
and put his beak on it. He grabbed it like a vise grips, turned his head
to loosen it, and then laid his head down next to the nut and started spinning
it off like you would with your thumb and forefinger. I don't know how he
learned that one but I've never seen a bird do that before! When I went
over he backed up with a look like OK, you caught me... He also listens and seems to understand what no means. He crawled down the side of his cage and when he went for the curtains I said "no Monty". He immediately climbed up on top of his cage. He's been relatively quiet with the exception of his talking which we're trying to encourage. Otherwise, he's getting well spoiled with attention from all of us which he gladly accepts. |
| I just wanted to give you a brief update on Sam,
whom I call Sami. He is doing quite well in his new environment. He prefers
to come out of the cage by himself, which is okay with me. I bought a small
perch just for him to practice "step up and down" with. He gets
better everyday. He also is starting to eat fresh vegetables everyday. He is starting to make more "birdie sounds" everyday when he sees me. He allows me to pet his head through the cage without biting me. He just needs someone to be patient with him, that's all, which I am. He seems to be happy here, having special attention and all my other birds to sing with. I am so happy that I adopted him. When I get a nice picture of him, I will send it to you, He is doing really well here. Thanks for all of your help and knowledge. Talk to you soon. Sincerely, Jenny |
| Hi Guys, Just a quick note to thank you for everything that you guys did for us when we brought Burt home. My daughter, who is now owned by Burt, has named the bird "Lilly". Lilly was quite upset last night, as she (we are calling him a she... hopefully he doesn't get a complex:) was in a new environment with new people. She is still warming up to us, but loves to ride on my daughter's shoulder and hang out with her when she's on the phone (which is all the time....), playing her games or writing her stories. I think they are going to bond really well. We will keep in touch - just wanted to thank you again. You guys are the absolute best! With as upside-down as our lives are currently, you made a little girl VERY happy! |

Hi Sandi, Just thought I'd send you pictures of Merlin on his new playstand. He seems to really like it. He already plays with the toy and likes to ring the bell. He also climbed down the ladder and back up again. He was dozing off a couple of times too. I am really enjoying him. Getting over being afraid of him. I haven't attempted to touch him yet. At the vet I asked to pet his head. :o) He was wrapped in a towel at the time. A new game we are going to play is peek a boo with a small towel. The vet suggested this for Merlin to get used to a towel. Will keep you updated on his progress. Nancy & Al |
| Hello everyone at fine feathered friends sanctuary!
I know you all miss me very much but I am happy with my new mom and dad.
I take naps and showers with them, and I even have my own place set at the
table for meals. During the day while our humans are at work they leave the TV on and we all watch Animal Planet. our humans have this big wrinkled face creature who hangs out underneath my cage and waits for me to drop my foot toys so he can tear them up. Mom always has to swat his butt and tell him "NO, those are Dora's Toys," and then she washes them. I think its funny. Some times when mom and dad leave the living room, instead of screaming for them, i just get off my cage and go walking the house to find them. mom is usually in the kitchen and dad is on the computer. I Also have my own home made perch in the computer room so dad and i can play games . I usually just watch, I just wanted to write and say hi, and that I love you all. |
